- Henry David Thoreau

“Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, ‘I am killing him…all for the passing pleasure it brings me.’ And something inside me clicked. I realized as I watched him fight for breath, that his life was as important to him as mine is to me.”

- Paul McCartney

When I was twelve, I went hunting with my father and we shot a bird. He was laying there and something struck me: Why do we call this fun to kill this creature who was as happy as I was when I woke up this morning?”

Being old is awesome

I hate to make generalizations and I truly don’t want to insult anybody but I can’t help but notice that a lot of the Tumblr community between the ages of 18 and 23 is anxiety-prone and depressed. The segment of the Tumblr community ages 23 to 30 (yes, we’re here) is still struggling with big life issues and occasionally given to deep sadness but we are doing better keeping things in perspective and accepting ourselves warts and all. We Oldies are a bit more comfortable in our skin and able to deal with bullshit with the understanding that it’s actually only bullshit and nothing that will destroy us utterly.

Understand, please, that I don’t mean to condescend or disparage anyone. This is rather meant to be a message of hope: All that nonsense about high school and college being “the best years of your life” might, in fact, be complete nonsense. This is a popular opinion among people who divide the entirety of life into two categories: working and drinking. Anyone who wants something deeper or has a more nuanced perspective tends to find that life is complicated and something that takes a lot of practice and patience. If you are smart and creative and generally too complex to simply be satisfied getting bombed every Friday, you will probably find that life might need growing into. This takes a lot of time and most people in their 20’s are still working on it. BUT THE OLDER YOU GET, THE BETTER IT GETS.

I’m not saying your problems will vanish but you’ll be able to see their role in your life: they’re JUST problems and they don’t define you and they don’t destine you. YOU define you and destine you. Learning to like yourself can be tricky, too. It took me fucking AGES and I’m still working on it. But I like myself more now than when I was 22 and then more than when I was 17. Part of this is years of self-examination and brutal honesty carving away at who I am now and another big component is that getting older makes it easier to filter out the negative influences on your life.

This last point is crucial: As you get older, your neurotic and negative parents will fade and recede and your strict or chaotic upbringing (fuck, which is worse?) will fade and recede and the utter childishness of adolescence and adolescent social culture will, too. All that remains is YOU and you can be whatever you want and it’s easier than you think if you’re just honest with yourself and you like who you are. Again, there will still be mountains of bullshit but you start to appreciate the fact that problems are just innate to life and, at the least, your problems are your own and not that of a pathetic education system or your family or your religion or whatever restrictive structure wanted to warp you and cow you. It’s a lot better that way.

Cheer up! You will get to own your whole life, good and bad, in the very near future and that’s exactly what you need and deserve.

The Hives - “Main Offender”

The Hives - “Main Offender”

NYT piece on fur industry excludes blood, guts, and torture

hereblog:

This New York Times piece by fashion journalist Eric Wilson explaining fur’s recent resurgence on runways has a gaping hole in it: not one sentence is devoted to considering the lives and terrible plights of the non-human animals who are caged, anally and genitally electrocuted, and most often skinned alive for their fur.

(Mr. Wilson did include the tidbit that some designers “said they felt confident using fur after examining the chain of production and finding it humane,” but you’ll notice that he neither questioned this ridiculous claim nor mentioned the designers’ obvious personal stakes in reciting it.)

I’m glad the paper is interested in publishing how fur companies court and pamper designers behind the scenes to get their stolen skin on runways, but why aren’t they also interested in describing the dirty details of how fur is actually procured? Wouldn’t that be telling the whole story to readers? And isn’t that frankly far more compelling information than how the latest fleeting fashion trend became trendy?

Unfortunately, this pattern of institutional speciesism is very common: mainstream journalists often cover the human drama surrounding animal welfare issues while ignoring those non-human animals whose entire lives are at stake.

They’ll need to be pressured to change for the better, so it’s great to leave comments or email authors when you see this in practice on the internet. If you’re a member of nytimes.com, you can send Mr. Wilson a polite but firmly informed email by going to his news page and clicking on the link entitled “Send an email to Eric Wilson.”
