Out of curiosity, does anyone following my blog like punk, noise punk, industrial, thrash or hardcore? David Brothers looks at how “Team Comics” style boosterism has largely been co-opted by DC and Marvel to mean “three cheers for superhero branding” instead of anything remotely related to comics as an artform, why a certain comics “journalism” site needs to be called out for their shameless ass-kissing and why this is all a massive detriment. SERIOUSLY, this is a great fucking article and even the comment section is relevant. Must must read.

I have just started reading ‘Chavs; The Demonization Of The Working Class’ by Owen Jones. Within the introduction it highlights the deep inequalities of our society. If we were to call a person a ‘Paki’ it would be classed as wrong and racist, if we were to call a homosexual a ‘faggot’ it would be classed as homophobia, but if we call a working class person a ‘chav’, it is accepted and taken on the chin. Where is the equality in that? For an upper class person to look down upon those poorer than them and label them something with connotations of council houses, welfare benefits, and unintelligence surely should be classed alongside sexism and racism? We see a group of hooded youths and we avoid them, why do we judge them based on their appearance, why do we have such negative ideas of ‘chavs’ and the working class as a whole? Due to minorities of these classes being ruthless and destructive the media has depicted the whole of the working class as ‘chavs’, disgusting, vile beings, sadly due to happenings such as the riots that spread the UK in the summer of 2011 we are left with the view that all working and underclass people are these destructive monsters that are destroying our society, when in fact it is not them at fault, it is the society that has corrupted minds into believing so.

In order for capitalism to survive there must be inequality. There must be people to do the jobs nobody else wants to do, and these people are usually those from a poor background that shaped the rest of their lives. Capitalism wants the middle and upper class to succeed, and sets the lower classes up to fall on their faces before they have even had a chance. The divide in society is still very clear, in fact I would argue it is clearer than ever. The bourgeoisie oppress the proletariat from the beginning, the proletariat are put through systems such as education merely for them to believe that the outcome of being a lower class citizen was deserved as they didn’t work hard enough, when really it is a case of class! If you are from a good background, the chances are you will out-do somebody from a working class background, and if you are from a working class background you will just accept this fate as though it is deserved.

Corruption, that is what our society is based on. Around the ideas and unfair inequalities which capitalism causes. The media portrays these minority of hoolagans as the majority, causing middle and upper class citizens to be ideologically conditioned into believing that that’s the case, and furthermore causing a sense of hatred toward lower classes. In our modern society it would not be accepted to be racist, it would not be accepted to be sexist or homophobic publicly, so why is it acceptable for upper classes to maintain a sense of hostility and prejudice against those who are ‘inferior’ to them? It is not just, it is not fair, and the corrupt state and wrong doings of capitalism that is to blame!

Very good piece. Nicely said. It’d be nice if more young people were this perceptive. Yes, language and image and stereotypes are being used to keep you in place… for the profit of people with a lot more money than you.
