I know it’s selfish…
but sometimes I wish people would stop moving to Portland. If you’re thinking about moving here, i recommend you don’t. We have enough out-of-towners already, thanks, and I’d like to be able to afford a decent place to live in the city I grew up in.
Most cities worth their salt are strengthened, both economically and culturally, by an infusion of new blood. The alternative would be an aging city whose population consists only of people who already live there, never attracting fresh young minds or business. And if you think that’s a good option, take a long, hard look at the rapidly-decaying, post-industrial midwestern Rust-belt (Hi, Central PA!) If inflated costs are an issue, they are probably mitigated by increased pay and job opportunity. Low cost of living and low standard of living go hand in hand… if you want a cheap apartment, just come to a hollowed-out steel town. You might only make 20 grand a year, but your rent’ll be dirt cheap.
