I just thought of a great idea for a band
I’ve already determined that it’s hard to impossible to find optimistic songs. Thinking about it has given me a great idea for a band: The four members are well-adjusted, functional, grown adults who, despite the normal problems we all go through, are generally satisfied with their lives.
Instead of drugs and alcoholism and utter agony, they usually write songs about the positive parts of common, everyday life that we all enjoy - the small things that make us glad to wake up in the morning. The songs themselves aren’t kitschy or new age or trippy, they are simply listenable and catchy rock tunes that aren’t about being misunderstood or alienated or lonely or heartbroken or disenfranchised from a society that is being overrun by evil madmen, they’re just generally pleasant songs that actually reflect your day-to-day life instead of some artificial, bogus descent into the depths of nihilistic despair.
Surely there would be MORE available real-life source material from which to draw inspiration rather than less? People actually go on dates and tell funny jokes and name their dog “Booger”… from my experience, THAT kind of stuff is more real for a vast majority of people than waking up in a urine-soaked toilet with a heroin needle jutting out of your arm like a character from Trainspotting. Even in my darkest most Morrissey-listening moments, I still had a job and managed to stay off hard narcotics and not murder my mother or rebel against the government. I just don’t feel like I can relate to the classic rocker pose and I don’t think most rockers do, either, much of the time.
Music for a good mood, I say! I DON’T hate everyone I meet, where’s MY punk rock?
