This country is generally obsessed with signs. They love signs all over the place, telling you what to do, what not to do. It’s not that people are generally frightened of violence or muggers or whomever, people are frightened of authority and the police because they’re the people who have complete control over you and they can do anything to you and there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s why this is a frightened city. It’s a police city.
